So you’re ready to sell your home… awesome! Preparing your home so it is as appealing as possible to potential buyers is called home staging. While home staging is an artform all unto itself, there are a few basic tips that all homeowners should keep in mind:
This sounds self-explanatory, and we don’t mean to insult your cleanliness, but this is a really important part of home staging! Don’t cut any corners. Make sure your floors are spotless, windows and mirrors are sparkling, corners behind doors are clean etc. This is key - it’s the simplest way to make your home more appealing to potential buyers.
This follows on from the last point. Clear the clutter away. Put appliances on kitchen counter tops into storage, put the kids’ toys away, put papers away, clear all the bits and pieces off of the fridge etc. In short, allow the potential buyers to imagine their stuff in your space. Decluttering will also give the impression that your home is larger than it is. One thing to keep in mind though, make sure your home still feels lived in. You don’t want it devoid of personality, but you also don’t want it to be overpowering.
Before deciding to see the inside of a home, most buyers take a little drive-by beforehand. Obviously, it is very important that they like what they see. Make sure your garden and the exterior of your home is respectable. If your siding needs a wash, rent a power washer, if your trim needs a lick of paint, get it done! First impressions count for a lot. One thing people often overlook is the visibility of the house number. Make sure your house number is easy-to-read, so potential buyers are not left frustrated while looking for your house.
Obviously, there’s a lot more to home staging than the above, but we have given you the very basics. If you have any questions about selling your home, please contact us.
